Bishop Clarence Laney

Bishop Clarence Laney, Jr. is a native of Selma, NC. The sixth of seven children born to Mr. Clarence and Cecelia Laney was saved at the age of five, joined the Selma Church of God of Prophecy (COGOP) and accepted his call to ministry at 13 years of age. Bishop Laney was blessed to be mentored by many pastors, teachers and community sages across denominational lines. His diverse Christian formation contributes to his ecumenism and appreciation for all forms of worship. He holds a Doctorate of Ministry (D.Min.) and a certificate in Black Church Studies from Louisville Presbyterian Theological Seminary in Louisville, KY, a Master of Divinity from Duke University School of Divinity, Durham, NC and a B.A. in Broadcast Journalism from St. Augustine’s College in Raleigh, NC and is a 2007 graduate of the Harvard Divinity School Leadership Institute in Cambridge, MA. 

Bishop Laney

In 1996 he was appointed Pastor of the Church of God of Prophecy in Durham NC. In May of 1998 the name Monument of Faith Church (MOF) was added to personalize the ministry. In January of 2004 a new sanctuary was built to accommodate the congregational growth. Since his appointment, significant growth in membership and finances has occurred. Existing ministries have been strengthened and over twenty new ministries have been birthed. Under Bishop Laney’s leadership, education, both spiritually and academically has become the cornerstone of this ministry. MOF is a progressive liturgical Pentecostal church with a strong commitment to social justice and community outreach. Bishop Laney has preached and taught throughout the United States, Canada and Sierra Leone, West Africa.

In addition to his pastoral responsibilities, Bishop Laney serves as Bishop of NC COGOP Region #3 providing oversight for four districts and 26 denominational churches. Bishop Laney is also a member of the NC COGOP State Ministerial Review Board. He is a proud member of Kappa Alpha Psi Fraternity, Inc., Durham Congregations, Associations, and Neighborhoods Clergy Caucus.

He is married to the former Lisa Carvana who holds a BA in Business Administration from East Carolina University and an MBA and MAT from Meredith College in Raleigh, NC. Lady Lisa is a public school teacher and a lifetime member of Delta Sigma Theta Sorority, Inc. Bishop and Lady Laney have two sons, Caleb Elijah and Joshua Holt. Bishop Laney enjoys exercising, reading, traveling, and spending quality time with family and friends. His favorite saying is that of Fredrick Douglass, “If there is no struggle, there is no progress.”
